One of the important keys to success in college is taking the right courses--courses that you need to build your academic skills and to achieve your educational and career goals.

It is important to choose courses that are at a level equal to your current academic skills--not too easy so that you become bored, nor too difficult so that you become discouraged or receive unsatisfatory grades. The Placement Tests are an essential success tool and assist you to select the right courses.

Cañada College Placement Tests are required to enroll in most English, ESL, and mathematics classes. You are exempt from the Placement Tests in English and/or Math if you fall into one of the following categories:

1.) You have taken the Placement Tests at Cañada College, CSM, or Skyline within the last two years and the test results are available.

2.) You are a former student or a transfer student from another accredited college in the United States and have completed course work in Mathematics and/or English with a grade of "C" or better. You must bring unofficial transcripts or other evidence of grades to your counseling appointment to verify this exemption.

3.) You can show evidence of completing the College Board Advanced Placement Test (AP) in English Language, English Literature, or Mathematics with a score of 3,4, or 5.

The following pages will provide information about the Cañada College Placement Tests. You will find practice mathematics problems that will prepare you to choose the appropriate math test to take. English and reading course information will follow as well as several sample English test questions.
