This includes a detailed discussion of Fund 1 with a review of the college's strategic plan and goals. This meeting will be held on Thursday, Nov. 13 from noon to 2 p.m. in Building 2, Room 10. In addition, an all-college meeting will be held Tuesday, Nov. 18 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Building 3, Room 142 at which Kathy Blackwood, the District CFO, and President Mohr will explain the district and college budget situation in detail. FACES OF CAÑADA

Michelle Morton Joins Library Staff

Bilingual librarian comes from Stanford library.

Michelle MortonMichelle Morton will be joining the Cañada College Library staff this January. She comes to Cañada from Stanford University, where she worked with the U.S. History collection at the Green Library. Previously she worked in the UC Berkeley Library and at UC Santa Cruz, where she taught courses in the Writing and Literature Departments.

“I was excited to come to Cañada because of the faculty and staff’s obvious commitment to students.” Cañada’s designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution also gives Michelle a chance to use her Spanish language skills and her training in Latino and Latin American Literature. “I’m looking forward to working with faculty, counselors, and tutors to support student growth and success. I hope faculty and students from all programs will think of the library as a resource for class projects.”

The Cañada College Library is a branch of the Peninsula Library System and can access materials from other libraries in that system. The library has no time limit on computer usage and, from the Reserve Book Collection, students can borrow many textbooks used in classes at Cañada. Librarians can help students research any topic and track down reliable resources, both in print and online.

For more information, visit the library’s website <http://www.canadacollege.net/library/> or call 306-3480 for more information.

On Wednesday, October 22, over 90 students and faculty assembled to hear Dr. Howard Peters, who received his PH.D. in Chemistry from Stanford University, speak on the chemistry and history of chocolate.   A wide variety of chocolate samples were tasted by all and a 10 pound block of chocolate was given as a door price.

On Thursday, October 23, a career panel was hosted by the Chemistry Department and MESA.  Science professors and industry professionals from the pharmaceutical industry and the bio-tech industry spoke to students about how their under graduate degrees in Chemistry led them to discovering their life’s work.  And finally, on Saturday, October 25, high school, middle school, and elementary school students from all over San Mateo County attended our outreach activity at the Safeway Store in Sequoia Station to watch Chemistry student volunteers from Cañada demonstrate simple chemical experiments.   Everyone who stopped by our booth was encouraged to try a few hands-on chemistry experiments planned by Dr. Jeanette Medina, Professor of Chemistry at Cañada.
