Cañada College online
april 2006

Cañada students are really shining of late. This month's issue of The Olive Press features a story on six interior design students that won awards at the annual San Francisco Interior Design Student Career Forum - including three first-place prizes; two students who recently received scholarships, including a $3,500 award for biochemistry major Carlos Rodriguez Serrarno; and a fascinating story about a team of students invited to the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory to observe as scientists used an x-ray beam that illuminated a 1,000-year-old manuscript that concealed the work of ancient mathematical genius Archimedes. Congratulations also go out to Counselor Arturo Hernandez, who received the Outstanding Latino Teacher Award from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education and to Soroya Sohrabi who was recently named program supervisor for outreach, retention and transfer. If you haven't noticed, the Building 9 construction project is progressing rapidly. Everyone is invited to sign the final beam on April 6 before it's lifted into place at a special "topping out" ceremony. We'll see you there!

Cañada College, Notre Dame de Namur Sign Agreement

Transfer agreement guarantees Cañada students entry to Belmont university

Cañada College and Notre Dame de Namur University have signed a guaranteed transfer agreement that will make it easier for Cañada students that graduate this spring and beyond to attend the private Belmont university.

The agreement, signed in late February, stipulates that any student who successfully graduates with an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree from Cañada College with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and is in good disciplinary standing is guaranteed admission to Notre Dame de Namur University. It applies to any student who has completed the application process at Notre Dame de Namur for either the fall or spring semester within one year of completing his or her degree at Cañada College.

Cañada College is a public community college located in Redwood City and Notre Dame de Namur is a private, four-year university located in Belmont .

"This is a very good agreement for our students," said Melissa Raby, dean of counseling and enrollment management. "Notre Dame de Namur is a top destination for our students. Notre Dame de Namur has small class sizes, it offers financial aid packages, and it is close to home for many of our students."

As part of the agreement, Notre Dame de Namur officials also agreed to work with potential transfer students pursuing their Associate Degrees and promised not to recruit those students for transfer before the degree is completed unless approved by the Transfer Center director at Cañada College. The university also agreed to have a representative visit Cañada College at least once every month of the fall and spring semesters and to provide interested students with the name and contact information of the Notre Dame de Namur assistant director of admissions for transfer recruitment who will serve as their admission counselor.

"The students benefit because they'll receive academic advising from Notre Dame de Namur during their final year at Cañada," Raby said. "This will guarantee that they are on course to graduate in a timely manner."

In addition to Notre Dame de Namur, Cañada College has transfer agreements with UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, UC Riverside, CSU Monterey Bay , San Jose State University and the University of Santa Clara.

SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENTS

Cañada Students Watch History Unfold

Students observe as scientists recover a hidden manuscript from Archimedes

Cañada College students were front and center earlier this month when an x-ray beam at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory illuminated a 1,000-year-old manuscript that concealed the work of ancient mathematical genius Archimedes.

The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was organized by Cañada student and Stanford Linear Accelerator Center employee Francisco Prado.

The pages of the manuscript first came to the linear accelerator last May. At that time, a research team of museum curators, x-ray scientists and an ancient mathematics historian showed it was possible to read obscured layers of text and graphics by shining x-ray light specifically tuned to make the iron pigment in the ink become fluorescent.

students at the Stanford Linear AcceleratorCañada students were able to watch the team study additional pages of the Archimedes manuscript to reveal more of the ancient text. The manuscript is called a palimpsest because the original text - a 10 th century copy of Archimedes' 3 rd century B.C. treatises - was scrubbed nearly clean and written over with a religious text in the 13 th century. Modern forgers added to the layers by painting over both texts with religious scenes on at least five pages but faint traces of the 10 th century ink remain embedded in the goat-skin parchment.

Photographed are students (from left to right) Merela Tuzovic, Francisco Prado, Gideon Aung, Hale Reynolds, Francisco Rios, Lizbeth Mendoza, Alberto Sandoval and Carlos Hernandez. The faculty members in attendance were Jeannie Mecorney, Jack Preston (not pictured), Ray Lapuz and Chuck Iverson.

"This was an incredible opportunity for our students and faculty," said Iverson. "It was an amazing process. I want to thank Francisco for arranging the tour."

Brazilian Funk Band Bat Makumba to Play Tuesday, April 4

Are you ready to get your groove on? It should be easy when Bat Makumba, one of San Francisco 's hottest bands, plays Tuesday, April 4 on the front plaza at noon. The band's performance is part of the Festival del Sol sponsored by the Associated Students of Cañada College. In addition to free music, there will also be free food.

Last year, Bat Makumba was nominated for the Best World Music Band by the San Francisco Weekly. Their local shows in San Francisco sell-out regularly.

The brainchild of Brazilian natives Alex Koberle and Emiliano Benevides and Americano bassist Carl Remde, Bat Makumba is the crossroads between the traditional music of their equatorial homeland and the punk, rock and funk influences of the US and UK. Locals to San Francisco , Bat Makumba's show is a hip renegade carnaval party full of tropicalia tinged ska, punk influenced forro, and rock infused samba.

The band will head to the Northwest for a series of shows following its Cañada performance.

Political Awareness Club to Sponsor Discussion of Sudan

Did you know that over the last two years more than two million people have been forced to flee their homes in Darfur, Western Sudan because of tensions between Arabs and Africans? The situation has devolved into the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, according to international observers, and the U.S. State Department.

On Wednesday, April 5 the Cañada College Political Awareness Club will sponsor a discussion of the situation in Sudan . Titled "Sudan: Genocide or Civil War," the discussion will focus on the United Nations' actions - or lack of actions - in the country. It will be held in Building 3, Room 148 at 1 p.m.

"Our goal is to promote critical thinking and the exchange of information," said Elysse Kray, president of the club. "We want a balanced discussion of the issues. We want to present the audience with accurate information, not just opinion."

A similar discussion will be held May 3. It's titled "Gay Marriage: Ethics vs. Legalization."

Cañada Students Win Big at Interior Design Competition

Six students placed, three grabbed top honors

interior design studentsSix Cañada College interior design students placed - and three took home first-place honors - in the annual San Francisco Interior Design Student Career Forum held March 3-4 at the San Francisco Mart.

First place honors went to Yukari Haitani for her design of an outdoor kitchen; Cynthia Walden for residential lighting; and Christine Sheldon for laundry design.

The college swept the competition in the outdoor kitchen design category as Carol Swanson finished second and Kari Hensel third. Susannah Gardner took second place in the residential lighting competition.

While Cañada College students annually win awards in the competition, Interior Design Department Coordinator Nancy Wolford said this year was exceptional.

"To sweep one competition and finish first and second in another competition is absolutely fantastic," Wolford said. "I'm so proud of this group of students."

interior design entryThis year, there were 86 entries in eight different design competitions, each with different criteria. The event is attended by close to 500 interior design students from colleges, art and technical schools, and universities from Northern and Central California and Nevada . About 50 Cañada students attended this year's event. It is one of the largest interior design career events in the country.

Several Cañada interior design faculty were actively involved in planning the competition. Adjunct faculty Mary Jo Camp, Martha Miller Girdlestone and Wolford helped organize the event while adjunct faculty Sharon Kasser and Camp were two of the featured workshop speakers.
