Our Services

Purpose: The First Generation Peer Mentorship Program is designed to support First Generation students in their educational endeavors. Mentees will receive support and services from mentors and student leaders on campus, faculty and staff, as well as participate in campus events and organizations that will aid in enriching their overall college experience.

Services we provide to mentees:

  • Receive one-on-one peer support
  • Learn about various resources on campus
  • Stay informed on important college deadlines
  • Help with how to develop college success strategies
  • Become more knowledgeable of financial aid services
  • Opportunities to go on college tours

Advantages

First generation students who join BTO will have the opportunity to work with mentors, all of whom are students and leaders at Cañada College.

Mentees are required to: 

  • meet with their mentor regularly throughout the semester for support and
  • attend campus events
  • have a chance to attend various workshops and seminars to enhance their learning experience.

Student Learning Outcomes:

After successful completion of this program students should be knowledgeable of:

  • Various resources available on campus
  • Tutoring services and referrals (one-on-one and group)
  • Important deadlines
  • Learn new study and test- taking strategies
  • Various financial aid services and financial literacy
  • How to have a sense of acceptance and belonging
  • Assistance with the transfer process and different majors and careers available
  • How to promote personal development and self-efficacy
  • Student organizations and clubs
  • How to search and register for classes
