Cal-State East Bay President to Speak at 40th Commencement

Approximately 200 graduates are expected to participate in outside ceremony.

Cañada College will celebrate its 40th anniversary at this year’s commencement ceremony scheduled for Saturday, May 29 at 10 a.m.

This year’s ceremony will be held outside in the quad and will feature students earning both Associate Degrees and Professional Certificates. The commencement speaker will be Dr. Mohammad Qayoumi, president of Cal-State East Bay. A special certificate of appreciation will be awarded to Sen. Joe Simitian for his work on behalf of education.

This year’s valedictorian will be Redwood City’s Aldo Garcia and Violeta Crow of Redwood City will receive the President’s Student Leadership Award.

“This will be a very special celebration,” said Thomas Mohr, president of Cañada College. “It’s the first time in recent years that we’ve had the ceremony outside and included both degree and certificate earners.”

The quad is located between Building 9 and Building 13 (map). Seating for 1,200 spectators will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Graduates and faculty will be seated closest to the stage. Parking is free. The outdoor venue will not be covered. A short reception will follow.
