College Administration Pushes for Changes in Food Service for Students
Cañada President Tom Mohr and Vice President Sarah Perkins Met With District Officials Last Friday to Guarantee Acceptable Food Service for Students
Cañada College President Tom Mohr and Vice President of Instruction Sarah Perkins met with San Mateo County Community College District officials last Friday to guarantee students would have acceptable food service while Buildings 5 & 6 are under construction.
“The purpose of the meeting was to assess what needs to be done in order to bring food service up to the level of service and convenience that was originally planned for during construction,” Mohr said. “The cafeteria and the rest of Buildings 5 & 6 will be closed for approximately 18 months while the they are renovated.”
When the semester opened last week, it became clear that students weren’t receiving the level of service that had been discussed during construction planning, Mohr said. Student representatives brought their concerns to the College Planning Council last Thursday, prompting Friday’s meeting.
“We take those concerns seriously and the District takes those concerns seriously,” Mohr said. “Friday’s meeting was very productive as we worked with the District on a plan to meet the needs of students.”
Mohr said he’s been assured that service at the mobile kitchen will take no more than four minutes per person and that additional food items – including packaged salads and sandwiches – will be added to the Pony Espresso coffee kiosk to help reduce lines at the mobile kitchen. An additional window for food services will be opened at the coffee kiosk and more food items will be available at the bookstore.
The college will also open the foyer in the Main Theater every day during lunchtime to provide a warm and convenient place for students to eat lunch. Additional tables will also be placed on the patios on the first and second floors of Building 9 to give students another dry place to eat.
“During the next few weeks, we are going to assess the adequacy of the food service every day and we’ll make whatever changes are needed to make the service convenient and comfortable,” Mohr said. “I encourage students to drop by my office and give me their ideas. While the cafeteria is under construction for the next 18 months, I want to make sure food service for students meets their standards.”
