Cañada College to Host Debate on Proposition 8
San Mateo County Supervisor Richard Gordon and a representative from Catholics for the Common Good will debate the proposition that ends the rights of same-sex couples to marry.
Cañada College will host a special debate on Measure 8, the hotly-contested proposition that would eliminate the rights of same-sex couples to marry in California. The debate will be held on Monday, Oct. 27 from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Main Theater, 4200 Farm Hill Blvd., Redwood City. The debate is free and open to the public. San Mateo County Supervisor Richard Gordon will argue against the proposition while a representative from Catholics for the Common Good will argue for the proposition. The debate will be moderated by Redwood City Councilwoman and Cañada College professor Alicia Aguirre. “This is one of the more controversial propositions on the ballot,” said debate organizer and Cañada College Librarian Dave Patterson. “Having a debate on this issue provides our students with an opportunity to hear points of view from both sides.” According to the state’s Official Voter Information Guide, Proposition 8 is an amendment to the state constitution that would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry. It provides that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.
