Jazz Concert, Film Series Highlight Women's History Month
Marcus Shelby Quartet will salute Harriet Tubman.
To celebrate Women’s History Month, Cañada College is sponsoring a special jazz concert and film series. The feature program is a presentation and performance titled "Harriet Tubman and Jazz" performed by the Marcus Shelby Quartet featuring Faye Carol. The event will include a presentation on the history of Harriet Tubman, negro folk music, and a discussion on jazz and social politics. The Marcus Shelby Quartet and vocalist Faye Carol will perform selections from Shelby’s Harriet Tubman recording. The event will take place Tuesday, March 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Cañada College Main Theater, 4200 Farm Hill Blvd., Redwood City. The event is free and open to the public.
The college will also present a film series highlighting the women’s suffrage movement; the history of the contraceptive “pill” and its impact on women and society; and the legacy of the princess of press, journalist Ida B. Wells. All three films will be shown in Building 2, Room 10. The films are:
Iron Jawed Angels Tuesday, March 16 12:30 to 2:15 p.m.
The Pill Thursday, March 18 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
Ida B. Wells: A Passion for Justice Thursday, March 25 2 to 4:15 p.m.
