Biographical Sketch

Doug Hirzel was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Education: He earned his B.A. in Biology from the University of California Santa Cruz. During his undergraduate years he was involved with Peregrine falcon reintroduction, sea lion cognition studies, and cross-cultural programs in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico and inner-city Washington D.C. He earned his M.S. in Zoology from the University of Idaho. His research focussed on the reproductive genetics involved in uterine receptivity to embryo implantation.

Scientific Experience: Doug has been employed in the aquaculture industry, monitored wildlife with the U.S. Forest Service, worked in Health & Safety at Chevron's Research facility, and investigated cancer angiogenesis while he was employed at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Teaching: He has taught upper-division courses in physiology and wildlife management as a visiting faculty at Whitman College. As an adjunct faculty he taught courses in general biology and anatomical terminology at Truckee Meadows Community College. He currently is a professor teaching anatomy and physiology at Cañada College. He is also the faculty advisor to the Pre-Med club and Nursing Student Association.
