Asad R. Kabir
Philosophy
I have been on death row for two years and spent 7 years in prison for my political activities in Iran (1981-1989). This existential encounter with death was the first impetus for me to think about philosophy. After being discharged, I migrated to the US and studied philosophy at UC Berkeley (BA) and San Francisco State University (MA), and a year of work in PhD program of philosophy at UC Irvine (hopefully I will finish it one day!). I have worked on the concept of "the self" during these years and my MA thesis is: The Concept and Practices of the Self: Fanon's Problematic and Foucault's Techniques of Self. My interests are in existential philosophy, Heidegger, Foucault, political philosophy, and multicultural study of philosophy and religion and/or mysticism. My hobbies: spending some quality time with people and my son (16-years-old), hiking, art movies, music, and teaching (!). I have taught philosophy and critical thinking in De Anza and Canada College as an adjunct faculty.
