ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS:

The SOLES project activities and events have been designed with five essential program strategies to accelerate student entry into the STEM fields, and facilitate the completion of lower-division course requirements and successful transfer to a four-year university to obtain a four-year degree as STEM majors.

SUMMER MATH JAM

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Summer Mathematics Bridge Program (Math Jam) is a two-week intensive mathematics program designed to improve students’ preparation for college-level math courses.  Emphasis will be given to preparation to take the Math Placement Test and improving basic mathematics skills and confidence through a combination of interactive learning, group learning, Academic Excellence workshops, one-on-one tutoring, individual instruction and workshops on study skills, test taking strategies, and problem solving.

At the end of the the program, participants will be retaking the Math Placement Test with the expectation of improving Placement results. Participants who successfully complete the program will be given free graphing calculators and tuition scholarship for Summer 2009 math courses.

2010 Winter Mini-Math Jam: January 11-15

As a follow-up to the highly successful Cañada College’s Summer Math Jam that was held from June 8th - June 19th, and the summer mini-Math Jam from Aug 10th-13th, a third intensive 5-day Mini-Math Jam program will be offered from January 11th to 15th, 2010.  This Mini-Math Jam is designed for students who want to review Math in preparation for either retaking the Math Placement test, or for taking a Cañada College math course in the spring semester.

Activities will start with a welcome and introduction of all Mini-Math Jam staff and participants at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, January 11th.  Please plan to arrive on time at the Cañada College MESA Center on the second floor of Building 9.  Plan to be on campus from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day of the program. Lunch will be provided.

SUMMER ENGINEERING INSTITUTE

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Summer Engineering Institute is a two-week residential program at the San Francisco State University campus, where participants will be provided with real-world context to the study of engineering through practical, meaningful, applied and hands-on problem solving and design-oriented projects.

Participants will engage in studies of mathematics, surveying, computer-aided design, and basic fundamentals of engineering. Daily activities will include classroom instruction, group and individual study, guest speakers, company tours, and recreational activities. 

The participants will be divided into groups and each group will be responsible for completing an engineering project. All materials and instructions will be provided. Participants will present their final engineering project in written and oral form to an Evaluation Committee. Awards recognizing student efforts will be presented at the Institute's Closing Ceremonies. 


ROOM AND BOARD:

During the two-week period, participants will be housed at San Francisco State University's residential apartments. Living quarters will be appropriately designated for male and female students.
 
Transportation to SFSU at the beginning of the program and from SFSU at the end of the program will be the responsibility of the participant. 
 
All meals will be provided, with accommodations for special dietary needs.

Academic Excellence Workshops

Academic Excellence Workshops (AEWs) are available to support students in most levels of mathematics, sciences and engineering courses. These AEWs are designed to help students master course content through study groups and problem-solving sessions led by AEW faciliators. Consult the MESA/SOLES Bulletin Board in the MESA Center for a complete schedule of of AEWs this semester.

Tutoring

Free tutoring is available to SOLES students in the following courses:

Biol 100, 110, 130, 225, 240, 250 and 260
Engr 100, 210, 230, 240, 260 and 270.

Academic Support Workshops

Workshops on College Success, Time Management, Study Skills, Test Taking Strategies, Financial Aid, Scholarshps and Internship Opportunities, Healt and Wellness, etc. are offerred through the Learning Center. For a complete schedule of workshops, see the Learning Center Bulletin Board.


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

SOLES works with the MESA Program, the HSI-CCRAA COMETS Program, the Learning Center and the student organizations to provide professional development opportunities for math, science and engineering students in the form of industry speakers, panel discussions, professional development workshops and conferences.
