What is Alternate Media?

Alternate media generally refers to text or other materials produced in a specialized format intended for use by students with disabilities. These formats include e-text, large print, Braille, audio files, tactile graphics and closed captioning.

  • E-Text
    Electronic text is a data file that can be accessed by many programs such as MS Word, JAWS (screen reading program), Kurzweil and Duxbury Braille Translator.
  • Large Print
    Print that has been enlarged to at least 14 to 18 points for body text.
  • Braille
    Tactile written language.
  • Tactile Graphics
    Simplified graphical images that use raised lines and textures to convey information.
  • Audio Files
    Books on CD, audio recordings such as mp3s.
  • Closed Captioning
    Text transcription of spoken/audio portions of movies, videos, TV shows and DVDs.
