2009-2010 ASCC STUDENT CLUB/ORGANIZATION LEADERSHIP AWARD CRITERIA
The ASCC Student Club/Organization Leadership Awards were established with the expressed purpose of recognizing the contributions of students and their organizations to Cañada College.
The awards banquet and dinner will took place Thursday May 13, 2010 at Central Park Bistro 6pm-8pm. Award receipents are listed below.
AWARD DESCRIPTIONS
OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN LEADERSHIP--Jeremy Morales, SHPE Co-President
The “Outstanding Achievement in Leadership” award recognizes a student that is a member of one or more organizations and extends his or her involvements beyond the campus and into the community. The individual portrays both strong leadership characteristics and academics. He or she serves as a role model for the student body by volunteering, participating in events, excelling in school, reaching out to fellow students, and exuding an overall positive attitude. Recommenders should include specific examples of how the student meets the stated criteria.
UNSUNG HERO AWARD--Isaac Ayala, EOPS Student Club Vice President
The “Unsung Hero” award recognizes a student whose contributions might otherwise go unrecognized, and who has displayed leadership qualities and dedication to co-curricular activities and the club/organization over the last year.
EMERGING LEADER OF THE YEAR--Marty Martinez, EOPS Student Club President
The “Emerging Leader of the Year” award recognizes a new club officer/member who most noticeably demonstrates initiative, motivation, and potential for continued student leadership within the club or organization. Recommenders should include examples of how the candidate demonstrated maturity, passion, and dedication to the club/organization.
PIONEER AWARD--Juan Del Rio, EOPS Student Club Public Relations Officer
This “Pioneer” award recognizes a student who has displayed initiative in the creation, revival, or rehabilitation of a student organization. Such a student is considered a hard worker for the unselfishness with which he/she has given time and effort to provide a foundation for the student organization. The recommender should include examples of the student’s efforts to increase membership, present campus activities, etc.
ADVISOR OF THE YEAR--Jose Romera & Lorraine Barrales-Ramirez, EOPS Student Club
The “Advisor of the Year” award recognizes a faculty or staff member currently serving as an advisor who has been a visible and integral part to the success of the student club/organization by providing continuous support and contributing to the growth and development of individual students in the organization. Recommenders should provide specific examples of how the advisor has supported the club members leadership development, demonstrated professionalism, character, and exceptional care for students at the College.
OUTSTANDING STUDENT CLUB/ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR--Phi Theta Kappa
The “Outstanding Student Club/Organization of the Year” award recognizes the group that has had the most positive influence on the student body and made an outstanding contribution to Cañada College as an organization. The club/organization will have gone above and beyond to reach new students, program events and make the campus a better place. Nominations should include a description of innovative ideas, how the organization has improved, how the organization has responded to the needs of the campus community, any outstanding events, programs, speakers, services, etc.
MOST IMPROVED STUDENT ORGANIZATION--Black Student Union
The “Most Improved Student Club/Organization” award recognizes a group that have shown tremendous ability to address, and overcome challenges. Candidates should demonstrate a progressive interest in club improvement, developing leadership within membership, and show a renewed energy and approach towards their activities and program efforts. Recommenders should include examples of how the club increased membership, visibility on campus, and/or made contributions with greater levels of activity.
OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT--Robotics Club, Citizens in School After School Program
The “Outstanding Community Service Project” award recognizes a student club/organization that successfully planned and implemented a community service project that met the needs of the greater Redwood City community, a non-profit service organization, and/or the College. Recommenders should include information on why the project was chosen, the purpose, and how the project benefited the community.
DIVERSITY PROGRAM OF THE YEAR
The “Diversity Program of the Year” award recognizes a student club/organization that has enhanced the campus climate with an educational program in one or more of the following areas: race, gender, religion, culture, disabilities, and/or wellness. The recipient of this award has made strides to enhance the understanding of diversity and social justice issues. The recommender should provide a description of the program in detail and include information regarding innovation, creativity in delivery, content, etc.
PROGRAM OF THE YEAR--Phi Theta Kappa, Welcome Week Informatio Booths
The “Program of the Year” award recognizes an activity, event or program that best exposed students to various opportunities to learn about themselves and others, promoted a sense of campus community and complemented the co-curricular events at Cañada College. Programs nominated for this category must be sponsored by a registered student organization.

Mission Statement
The Office of Student Activities creates a learning environment outside of the classroom by:
- Providing services, activities, and information that promote leader development;
- Encouraging student participation in campus life (i.e. clubs, student government, volunteer activities, events, etc); and
- Supporting student success in leadership roles and processes.
Getting Involved
The college experience is meant to be fun as well as academically rewarding.
At Cañada students can join a club, attend an event, or volunteer in the community
Getting involved is a great way to:
- Meet new people,
- Experience something new,
- Connect with the Cañada community,
- Develop leadership skills,
- Take a break from academics and relieve stress, and
- Build your transcript or resume

Register a Club!
To register a new or existing club students will need to:
- Create a constitution
- Have at least 4 officers and 1 adviser (district employee),
- Complete the online club registration form. New clubs/organizations will need to attach a copy of the club constitution,
- Have the club president and treasurer complete the mandatory club orientation
- Submit a signed Club Account Signature Card available at the Student Activities Office. The signature card requires signatures from the club president, club treasurer and club adviser.
For students interested in starting a new club, check with the Office of Student Activities to see if the club/organization you are interested in starting already exisit.
Vending Commission
The Vending Commission is a College-based committee funded through vending machine sales. The Vending Commission provides funding for events, activities, and programs that are student focused.
To qualify for funding a program or activity:
- Must target a maximum number of Cañada students
- Take place during the 09-10 academic year

Additional Services
Get a Cañada College Student I.D.
- Make the most of your Cañada College experience by paying your $8.00 Student Activities Fee and receive your official Cañada College School ID.
- Students can pick up a student I.D. or update a current Cañada I.D. in Building 9 Room 108 (see front desk staff for assistance)
- School ID's expire at the end of each semester
- You can renew your ID by paying your $8.00 activities fee, then updating your card with the current semester stickers
On-Campus Vending
Independent merchants, corporations, and non-profit organizations seeking to set up information tables, recruit students for employment, or sale approved merchandise on campus must complete a On-Campus Vendor Application to make a reservation for vending space.
- Reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance
- Vendors may not reserve tabling space on Fridays
- Vendors may set up as early as 9am and may stay on campus until 8pm
- Vendors will be provided with one table and two chairs (if requested)
Vending Machine Refunds
Refunds for malfunctioning vending machines can be obtained from the Student Activities Office, 5-211A during office hours.
On-campus Posting/Advertising
The On-campus Posting policies apply to all student�clubs and non-College affiliated organizations or individuals, looking to publicize an event or product for sale on College property.
