A Valuable Skill Set in Silicon Valley

Obtaining an Associate’s degree in Accounting from Cañada College is an excellent start to a prosperous career in the business field. Accounting is considered the “language of all business,” and is a valuable skill set for anyone wishing to work in Silicon Valley. Accounting offers an exciting and rewarding career to people who can work with numbers, focus on details, use a computer, and work as a team. There is a strong demand for accounting assistants, and you can advance in your career by demonstrating your skills on the job.

The Importance of Transferring

A Bachelor’s degree (any subject) is required to sit for the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) exam, and we can help you with your transfer goals. Cañada College’s accounting program offers courses needed to complete the requirements for the Professional Bookkeeper exam in addition to the courses needed for an Associate’s Degree in Accounting, which is the first step to becoming a CPA.

The Certificate of Achievement is designed for individuals interested in job opportunities at the entry-level in bookkeeping and/or computerized accounting data entry. Students interested in becoming professional bookkeepers may apply some of the course work in this certificate to the Certificate of Achievement in Accounting and the Associate's Degree in Accounting. The demand for entry-level bookkeepers and accounting data entry personnel remains high.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students completing this program will be able to:

  • Design and manage business documents using current technology to engage in creative problem solving.
  • Communicate an understanding of business concepts professionally through written, oral and visual presentations using current technology.
  • Recognize ethical behavior in their chosen profession and behave in a socially responsible manner.
  • Analyze business issues, interpret financial data and identify economic trends.

Accounting Speaker Series

In our Accounting Speaker Series, our guest speaker, Cañada College accounting alumna Jojo Kolby, shared her inspiring journey as a first-generation student. Jojo's insights into navigating college, pursuing a career in auditing, and achieving professional success resonated deeply with our students. Jojo's emphasis on mastering Microsoft Excel and the significance of networking and scholarships through organizations such as CalCPA was invaluable for the students. It was inspiring to learn that Jojo began her journey at Cañada as an ESL student and came dressed in a blouse and blazer that she made herself through our Fashion Department.
