The STEM Peer Mentor Program emphasizes relationship building and academic role-modeling between successful, more advanced STEM students and beginning STEM students (especially low-income, first-generation, minority, and female students).

Bio:  Hello everyone!!! My name is Yasmin Yudith Ochoa Salazar. I am a first generation college student; I was born in the U.S.A and raised in Mexico, so I’m bilingual. I am a Civil Engineering major, planning to specialize in geotechnical engineering. This is my second year, and I’m planning to transfer to a UC. Besides being a BTO mentor with a STEM focus, I work for the Speaker Series, and I’m also the vice president and secretary of the Math Club on campus. I am really excited to be working with you because I know what it is like to be a new student in your position. I am looking forward to helping you throughout your journey, and making it manageable by sharing all the resources that will help you succeed. Even if I am not your official mentor, feel free to ask me any questions. I am more than happy to help you out in your journey at Cañada College.

Bio: Hi, my name is Shalene Cannon and this will be my third year at Cañada. I’m a first generation college student aiming for a major in Biological Sciences. Currently I’m trying to transfer to a UC by Fall 2019 and won’t let anything get in the way of that goal. Being new to this program, I’m looking forward to helping other students overcome the struggles of college and help them stay on track for a successful transfer. Bio: Hi there! I'm Aly and I'm in my second year at Cañada College. I am majoring in Computer Science and I'm hoping to get my Associates before transferring in Fall of 2019! I transitioned to a full-time student at Cañada after working at a software company in Sacramento, where I was taking online and night classes to slowly chip at my requirements for transfer. In my time here, I've learned how to navigate through some of the programs and utilized the incredible resources the campus has to offer. I want to help you get the most of your time at Cañada, either by helping guide you to tools that can help you succeed or sharing my experience in the workforce. Bio: Hey Everyone! My name is Osvaldo Solorio and this is my fourth year at Caňada College. I’m a first generation student who is striving to transfer with an associates degree in engineering. I plan to transfer to a CSU in either a year or two. This is my first semester being a STEM mentor but I know many resources and staff members that I can connect you with. As a student at Caňada I’ve experienced successes and failures; this has taught me the do’s and don'ts in order to be a successful student so I can definitely give you tips and also give you some background about my experiences. Bio: Hello my name is Jay Magaña. I am a Math major seeking to become a math professor. I will be transferring to either a UC or CSU in 2019. Being a first generation latino student, I have learned how to move around a college campus myself. I am also a Math tutor at the STEM Center so if you're ever looking for me you'll most likely find me there.  Bio: Hello everyone! I am Sona, an international Computer Science major student. The name “Sona” is after a gaming mage character, whose personality inspires me to embrace challenges in life. She is neither the strongest champion nor using the best weapon; but she is still intelligent, flexible, supportive, and strong in fighting. You and I are both unique and have our own strengths as “Sona” is in her game. I can help you uncover your potentials on your way to success. Before Canada, I have accumulated working experiences in several part-time jobs and a full-time one at a bank. I am in my second year at the school and planning to transfer to a four-year university in Fall 2020. With a good mix of academic and real-life experiences, I believe that I can be a trustful mentor for you.

Bio: Hello, my name is Julissa Rico Ruiz and I am a first generation student striving to pursue a Civil Engineering career. I graduated from Half Moon Bay High School in the year 2016 and I plan to transfer to a UC in the fall of 2019.  On behalf of the San Mateo County Office of Education, I was certified attainment of proficiency in two languages; English and Spanish. Aside from being a student at Cañada and a STEM mentor, I am a member of the math and engineering/robotics club as well as the women in STEM community. Being an individual working towards a STEM major, I understand the difficulties one can encounter throughout one’s academic journey, however as a STEM mentor, I hope to assist you with any concerns or struggles you may have.

     Bio: Hello everybody! I am Leonardo Campos, a first generation Latino student who is striving for a major in mechanical engineering. I graduated from Summit Prep High school in the year 2017, and plan on transferring to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the year 2020. My ultimate goal is to have a career that revolves around bicycles, either making them or selling them, maybe even both. When I started my journey at Cañada College I did not know anyone or anything about college, and so I took it upon myself to learn as much as I can about the school and how I can succeed. As a student in Cañada College I have struggled and achieved countless times; because of my experience I believe that I can help guide you down the right path and give you many tips to succeed. I hope to be part of your learning process and someone you can thank when you walk down the isle to receive your diploma.

Bio: Hello! My name is Georgina Corral and I am currently pursuing my AS in Engineering and a BS in Bioengineering. I hope to transfer to a UC in 2019! I am a first-generation college student, so I know first-hand what it’s like to feel lost or be unaware of all the help that is available to us. I am also a Student Life Intern at the Center for Student Life and Leadership Development and a Math Tutor at the STEM Center, so you’ll see me around often.

Bio: Hey, everyone! I'm Dalila, and I'm about to start my third year at Cañada College as a Biomedical Engineering major. I am a latina, first gen college student, and am currently a research assistant with Stanford School of Medicine's Pathology department. My ultimate goal is to attend medical school and use that knowledge along with a degree in biomedical engineering to create new medical instruments that will make healthcare more accessible. My biggest hope in joining this program is to share my experience and knowledge with you. I cannot wait to get to know you and hopefully help you make the best of your time at Cañada College as a STEM major!
