S.T.A.R. Learning Community

The S.T.A.R. Learning Community is committed to supporting our Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Low-Income, and First-Generation college students. We provide culturally relevant support via cultural events and culturally relevant class curriculum that centers Asian American identities, histories, voices, and immigration. We are dedicated to student retention, completion, and transfer. We provide transfer workshops, campus visits, application assistance, and Peer Mentor support. We also place a high priority on overall student wellness, providing community building opportunities, an abundance of support, and mental health workshops.

Centering Identities and Experiences

Students who join the S.T.A.R. Learning Community will have the opportunity to take special classes that highlight their own identities and experiences, utilizing an Ethnic Studies lens! Additionally, the S.T.A.R. Learning Community will help ensure that your voice, experience, identity, and cultural values are represented here on campus!

Fall 2025 Special Courses

For Fall 2025, the S.T.A.R. Learning Community will feature two courses, reserved just for students who have joined the community! These courses will center Asian American voices, experience, and history through various racial, ethnic and immigrant communities:

  • English C1000 (formerly English 100) (Academic Reading and Writing) CRN: 97101
    • Meets in-person on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:45pm-2pm in Building 13 Room 231 with Professor Malavade.
  • History 245 (History of Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration) CRN: 88845.
    • Meets in-person on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:10am-12:25pm in Building 13 Room 230 with Professor Field.

S.T.A.R. stands for Success, Transfer, Access, and Relevance. 

  • Success: removing systemic barriers and centering the student’s identities to support and empower students to define their own success.
  • Transfer: providing the student with culturally aligned transfer support.
  • Access: centering the Ethnic Studies lens to respond to educational equities and to challenge Eurocentric curriculum.
  • Relevance: transforming campus climate, culture and curriculum by prioritizing wellness and hope.
