Cañada College is committed to assisting Veterans, their dependents, and reservists in obtaining their VA educational benefits and in achieving their educational and career goals.

Cañada College is approved by the State Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to certify veterans, dependents of deceased veterans, veterans that have a 100% service-connected disability and reservists as students. Once certified, veterans are able to apply for and use their educational benefits.

Federal VA Department Educational Assistance Programs

Learn about GI Bill eligibility requirements and find out if you can get these benefits. VA education benefits can help you pay your tuition, pick out a school, choose a career, and more. If you’re an active-duty service member or Veteran, a member of the National Guard or Reserves, or a qualified survivor or dependent, find out if you can get VA education benefits through the GI Bill and other educational assistance programs. Dependent (Spouse or Child of Veteran)

You may be eligible for Chapter 35 benefits or the Cal Vet Fee Waiver if you are the child or spouse of a service member. Reservist The Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) program offers up to 36 months of education and training benefits. If you’re a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard Reserve, Army National Guard, or Air National Guard, you may be eligible for this benefit. Active Duty Service Member

The Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (MGIB-AD) can help you pay for education and training programs. If you’ve served at least 2 years on active duty, find out if you qualify for the MGIB-AD program. CalVet Tuition Fee Waiver

A County Veteran Services Officer can help determine eligibility of the applicant and submit an application. Once an applicant has received eligibility documentation from the County Veteran Service Office, this documentation goes to the Financial Aid Office. To receive VA Educational Benefits you must complete the following two steps:

  1. Apply for VA educational benefits.
  2. Apply and enroll at Cañada College.
  3. Use the benefits at Cañada College.
Step 1 - Apply for VA Education Benefits

Veterans under Chapter 30, 31, 35 and 1606 and can apply for benefits online at www.va.gov/education/how-to-apply/.

The signature page, a copy of your DD-214 and your Notice of basic Eligibility (NOBE) DD-2384 if Chapter 1606 must be submitted to the VA Department to complete the VA application process

Step 2 - Apply and Enroll at Cañada College
Step 3 - How to Use Your Benefits at Cañada College
  • After you complete Step 1 and Step 2, please use the step below:
    • Submit  the following documents to the School Certifying Official, Stephen Soler (solers@smccd.edu).
      • Form DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, or DD-2384 for Chapter 1606
      • Transcripts
        • All official transcripts of prior college work and military schools must be submitted as soon as possible. Certification for benefits may be delayed if transcripts have not been received
        • Certificate of eligibility from VA Department
    • Submit signed Statement of Responsibility.
    • Submit signed Veteran's Certification Request.
